Kutani porcelains are produced in the Hokuiku district of Honshu, the Japanese main island. In the 19th century the style shifted to a red design called aka-e which features intricate designs. The gold technique is called kinran-de and the combination became aka-e kinran-de Kutani . It became popular in the west after the Vienna World Exposition of 1873, where the Japanese Government exhibited Kinrande (literally "gold brocade") porcelain.
