Pair of Victorian gilt bronze statues of dogs. Both have kite registration marks to underside of base for 1857 and further kite marks to back of both dog figures (one very unclear).
Significant wear to the gilt on both dogs but the resulting wear pattern gives them great charm and a real sense of age.
The diamond-shaped Registry mark, was used by the English patent office from 1842 to 1867 to identify pieces of English pottery, porcelain, and other products. From 1867 to 1883, "Rd. No." and a number was used indicate the registration number. Various guides are available on online for decoding the marks to give the year of registration.
