Robert Gray was born around 1755. He was apprenticed to Milne & Campbell, the leading goldsmiths in Glasgow at the time, who were responsible for many civic commissions. He was admitted to the guild in 1776. He began sending his silver to Edinburgh for assay in 1784, when duty was reintroduced.
