Scottish George III silver soup ladle in Old English pattern by Robert Gray of Glasgow with Edinburgh Hallmark for 1804.
A handsome ladle in very good condition with a minimum amount of surface scratching. Robert Gray of Glasgow, was described by Walter Brown (Finial, June 2006) as "arguably the finest Scottish maker of the first half of the 19th Century."

Robert Gray was born around 1755. He was apprenticed to Milne & Campbell, the leading goldsmiths in Glasgow at the time, who were responsible for many civic commissions. He was admitted to the guild in 1776. He began sending his silver to Edinburgh for assay in 1784, when duty was reintroduced.
