An uncommon woodblock of a cockerel and hen by Japanese Meiji artist K?gyo Tsukioka, sometimes called K?gyo Sakamaki (1869 –1927). He was a student and adopted son of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, and also studied with Ogata Gekk?. He studied under the painter and printmaker K?no Bairei, who introduced him to the traditional techniques of ukiyo-e pictures from the Edo and Meiji periods (17-19th-century). K?gyo is known for his depiction of Noh theatre actors, but he made the occasional bird and flower print or ‘kacho-e’.
An example can be found in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art.
