Bentwood bistro chair by renowned Austrian maker Thonet. This chair is the less common No. 20 pattern with a wicker seat and distinctive patterned back. Makers mark stamped to underside. Circa 1890.
Michael Thonet founded his company in Vienna in 1849 and was a pioneer in bentwood furniture.
One of his most popular and successful designs was the No. 14 (Vienna Coffee House Chair) which proved very popular with bistros and cafes. Most unusually for the time, the chair could be delivered flat packed for assembly by the customer. The Thonet company still exists today.
