A decanter with silver collar by John Grinsell & Sons of Birmingham, dated 1938. The decanter is in excellent condition with clear hallmarks and pattern number 17701. The stopper has a small nick. A pleasing Art Deco shape with two ring neck over a faceted body with concentric bands and star cut to base. This maker’s mark was registered in September 1905 and used until 1952.
Minor damage to stopper.
Established before 1864 as Grinsell & Bourne, the firm became John Grinsell & Sons after the partnership was dissolved in 1871. It was located at Victoria Works, 57 Tower Street, St. George‘s, Birmingham. Show rooms were opened at 13 Charterhouse Street, Holborn Circus, London and 73 West Nile Street, Glasgow. In around 1905, the firm was converted to John Grinsell & Sons Ltd. Later the firm was purchased by Barker Ellis & Co Ltd. The firm specialised in the manufacture of silver-mounted glass, stoneware and ceramic items.
