A finely painted scene of a courtly garden in Moghul style. Hand painted in restrained gouache watercolours with fine detail. It is surrounded by a floral border in the tradition of earlier manuscripts. Painted on silk, and in excellent condition.
The Mughal style of painting evolved in India during the reigns of the Mughal emperors (16th–18th century). The subjects treated were generally secular, consisting of illustrations to historical works and Persian and Indian literature, portraits of the emperor and his court, studies of natural life, and genre scenes. This painting is a twentieth century.
