George Cartlidge (1868-1961) was a fundamental figure in the design revolutions of aesthetic and art nouveau during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. He trained at Hanley School of Art and taught art before working for Sherwin & Cotton (1882-1900) and then setting up his own company Adams & Cartlidge. Both these companies specialised in the production of tiles. He worked for Hancockā€˜s from around 1918 to 1926 designing Morris Ware. S. Hancock & Sons was founded by a prominent Wesleyan, Sampson Hancock. He was succeeded by his three sons following his death in 1900.
