S Bridgwood & Son began in around 1820 when Sampson Bridgwood joined his mother’s two earthenware factories. The business was initially called Kitty Bridgwood & Son. Revived following insolvency, Sampson’s son joined as a partner in around 1852. The business was rebranded as Sampson Bridgwood & Son. Following their death, the business was taken over by Sampson’s daughter and together with her son became S. Bridgwood & Son in 1882. In June 1890 the business was placed into receivership and was bought at auction by the potter John Aynsley. Aynsley continued the name and in 1932 the business was incorporated as Sampson Bridgwater & Son Ltd. Bridgewood’s Anchor Pottery in Longton produced both china and earthenware. Its china was principally made for the US and Canadian markets.
