Cathrineholm was a factory based in Halden, Norway. It started as an ironworks around 1827, before moving to enamelware in 1907 and eventually closing down around 1972. One of their most famous designers was Grete Prytz Kittelsen (1917-2010), who is often referred to as the ‘Queen of Scandinavian Design‘. She played a huge part in the Scandinavian design movement and was probably responsible for the shape and bodies of the enamelware. However, she was not responsible for the lotus pattern, which is attributed to one of the workers at Cathrineholm, Arne Clausen. It is said her pattern was added to Kittlesen’s designs without her approval, but it proved a favourite in Scandinavia and across the US.
