A late Victorian hand-blown celery vase with scalloped rim, decorated with machine etched geometric bands with a central rope pattern.
This is in excellent condition with minor rubbing to the base as expected of its age.
Celery first began to be cultivated in eastern England’s wetlands in the early 1800s. As a Mediterranean vegetable, it didn’t grow easily. It was considered a luxury and through the course of the 19th century became a bit of a status symbol. Celery vases were developed to display the celery on the dining room table. These vases today make perfect flower vases, as well as being used for their original purpose.
