A large Chinese storage jar, freely painted in underglaze blue with continuous sweet pea tendrils. The beautifully hand turned wooden lid looks 19th century, maybe made of ash. The jar sits snug in its Victorian/ early 20th century oak stand.
The jar is in excellent condition. It has the expected glaze imperfections and kiln grit. What appears to be a chip to the lip is glazed, so must have been a potting imperfection. The unglazed neck has been stained dark brown.
The sweet pea was a popular Chinese motif throughout the 19th century, sometimes in combination with the Double Happiness symbol. The grey glaze of the underside suggests that this pot was made in the Daoguang period (1820 to 1850).
