Doulton was the first factory in England to establish an art pottery studio. Founded in 1815, Doulton & Co. started making ceramic sewage pipes and sanitary ware in 1846 but moved to artistic wares in the 1860s. In 1871, Henry Doulton launched a studio at the Lambeth pottery and offered work to designers and artists from the nearby Lambeth School of Art, who produced one-off pieces. King Edward VII awarded the Burslem factory the Royal Warrant in 1901, allowing the company to call itself Royal Doulton.
