Four Swedish cups and saucers in an iconic mid-century ‘Salix’ pattern of black or red willow leaves. These were designed in 1954 by Stig Lindberg (1916 - 1982), one of Sweden‘s most important post war designers. They were made by the renowned Swedish porcelain company, Gustavsberg, where he started his career in 1937. The popularity of the pattern has seen a revival in their production, but these are from the original series. The cups all have individual numbers: 319, 329, 349, 359 and the two red saucers: 258, 467. The red saucers have red back stamps, the black have black back stamps.
All the cups and saucers are in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips or restoration.
Lindberg was a multifaceted artist and designer, designing for Gustavsberg, Målerås, Kosta and Holmegaard glassworks, NK textiles, as well as illustrating books. His works can be found at the Nationalmuseum and Nordiska Museet in Stockholm, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
