Life Of Her Most Gracious Majesty The Queen, by Sarah Tytler and published by J S Virtue & Co in 1885. A very readable account of the life of Queen Victoria, printed in two volumes with an introduction by Lord Ronald Gower, F.S.A. There are 27 engravings plus 2 frontispieces and two title page vignettes.
The half-leather covers show wear with a bash to the green board on the front of one. However, internally the books are in very good condition. With the exception of mild foxing to the end pages, the pages are clean and unmarked. The binding is tight and the gilt page ends are good.
Sarah Tytler was the pseudonym of Henrietta Keddie (1827–1914), a prolific Scottish novelist who is known for her domestic realism. Born in Cupar, she attended school in Leith. In 1848, Henrietta and three of her sisters set up a school in Cupar, but after the death of her parents she moved to Blackheath, London. Her most famous book was Logie Town (1887), set in her home village of Cupar. Virtue & Co was a major book and print publishing firm founded by George Virtue (1794-1868) in the 1820s, perhaps best known for producing ‘The Art Journal‘. James Sprent Virtue was the second son of George Virtue and succeeded his father when he retired as head of the Virtue company in 1855.
