Victorian Perfume Bottle with silver embossed hinged lid with gilt interior by Birmingham makers Hilliard & Thomason. The globular bottle is encircled with a band of facet cuts between two bands of strawberry diamonds. The base has a star cut. The hallmark is Chester, 1895.
There are no chips or cracks to the glass. The lid fits tightly and the hinge is good. The top is elaborately embossed with very clear hallmarks. The lid does have a number of dents and the stopper is missing.
John Hillliard founded his business in 1837. He was joined by John Thomason in 1840 and traded as Hilliard & Thomason out of 1 & 3 Spencer Street, Birmingham. In 1890 after the death or retirement of John Hillard, Thomason was joined by William Edwin Thomason and JJ Richadson and started to trade as ‘John Thomason and Nephews‘. They continued to use the trademark ‘H.& T.‘. The firm exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the International Exhibition of 1862.
